Description:
Celebrate the 40th anniversary of Toikka Birds with the limited edition 2012 Annual Bird - Mirella. According to Professor Oiva Toikka, black and white are colors of good taste, so Mirella is made in the best of taste. Made by rolling white powder onto a clear glass bubble, followed by a black glass band rotating around the bubble, the bird seems dressed up in its most formal attire. Black glass is added for the tail and then the bird form is shaped.
Gray glass is then added for the head and beak, which takes on a bluish hue when the light hits it just right. The bird is round and plump, but charmingly so, with its long beak and tail extending from either end of its rotund center like two proud points.
Birds by Toikka
Oiva Toikka (1931-2019) is one of the greatest names in Finnish design. His iconic collection of Birds by Toikka first took flight back in 1972 at the Nuutajärvi glass factory with the creation of his small glass Flycatchers. Since then hundreds of new birds have joined the flock. The collection embodies a rich fusion of glassmaking traditions and would not have been possible without Toikka’s hands-on-approach at the glassworks and his keen understanding of each employee’s skills. Today, each glass bird is handcrafted and mouthblown at the Iittala Glass Factory.
